What Is A TheatreWorld ‘Signature Series’ Backdrop?

Since their inception, TheatreWorld Backdrops’ ‘Signature Series’ drops have generated a lot of buzz and interest. However, there is one question our client services team gets asked the most. “What makes a TheatreWorld product ‘Signature Series’?”

Our Directors’ Round Table considers many factors when deciding if a design will become a Signature Series product. The decision matrix is slightly different for fantasy-based vs. realistic designs. However, deciding factors always include level of detail, complexity of design, and unique elements. Above all else, they consider they estimated amount of design time and production effort required to produce an exceptional result.

In general, TheatreWorld’s Backdrops fall into one of four levels:

Scenic Level I

Reasonably straightforward designs. Mainly used as support backdrops. Minimal complexity. Can also be used as a single drop in a simply-staged production.

Scenic Level II

Medium design complexity. Main elements are detailed. A beautiful blending of colors. Very well executed. Can be used as a support drop in a complex production or as the single backdrop in a minimized presentation.

TheatreWorld Signature Series Level I

Significant levels of original design detail in most elements. Highly colorized. Architecturally accurate, where appropriate. Beautifully executed. Enhanced visual drama and audience impact. Signature Series Backdrops are beautiful pieces of art, truly a step above.

TheatreWorld Signature Series Level II

These backdrops are the most complex. Very unique, original designs. They contain extreme levels of detail. Highly colorized, with enhanced color palettes. Architecturally accurate, where appropriate. Maximum visual drama and audience impact.

Signature Series Backdrops at this level are masterpieces. They push the current state of artistry available in today’s backdrop market. We also refer to these drops as “Next Generation Backdrops”. However, Signature Series Backdrops require significantly more effort to create. They also take more time to paint and consume more materials. Moreover, they require greater quality-control oversight.

All TheatreWorld backdrops, regardless of their level, are created from medium weight muslin. We fully dip them in approved fire retardant solutions. (As opposed to spray-on applications.) We hem and reinforce the tops of the backdrops. Next, they receive grommets and ties approximately every 1′. We also hem the bottom of our drops. Then, we reinforce them with pole pockets, and hem and reinforce both sides. Finally, our team of qualified artists paints every drop.
