LES MISÉRABLES is one the longest running, greatest international smash hits of all time. Though it’s known for complex sets, LES MISÉRABLES can be as effective with minimal staging.

With that in mind, TheatreWorld’s scenic backdrop collection for LES MISÉRABLES supports and enhances multiple styles of presentation. It provides directors with the utmost flexibility in telling the beloved story of Jean Valjean.

Minimized Presentation Style.

If you’re a small theatre or a school, you may suffer from small cast sizes and smaller budgets. Use very simple, mood-setting backdrops and minimal set pieces to keep costs down. TheatreWorld recommends our Cloudy Crescent Moon and/or its Fiddler on the Roof Night Sky backdrops (pictured below) for this style of presentation.

Traditional Main Stage Presentation.

For a more traditional look, TheatreWorld’s Directors Round table recommends its Cloudy Crescent Moon, the Baroque Abbey or Baroque Cathedral Interior. We also recommend the Old World Town Square, Old World Tavern Interior, and TheatreWorld’s very unique LES MISÉRABLES Barricade. TheatreWorld’s LES MISÉRABLES Barricade backdrop is officially called Vintage American Battlefield – B. This unique backdrop can reduce the need to put cast members on scaffolding, which reduces the risk of injury. Alternately, you can match the backdrop to the scaffolding on stage to enhance the depth and drama of the entire scene.

The style of these secondary drops is more dramatic. They reflect Victor Hugo’s unique, dramatic style. (Many don’t know that the current National tour used Hugo’s painted works for inspiration.)

Finally, and on a more personal note, TheatreWorld would like to give a “Standing O” to Saint Peters Boys’ High School in Staten Island, New York for their wonderful presentation of LES MISÉRABLES. The school WON the 2012 Minty Awards for best musical presentation. Everyone did a great job and the direction was excellent.
