Look Out For Shrek (And Donkey Too)
When Shrek was first released as a feature film, it instantly gained a huge following. The film helped redefine fantasy and fairy tale themes for the modern generation. In 2008, it made its Broadway debut to the acclaim of both critics and audiences. Now Shrek the Musical is one of the most popular touring shows in the world. Luckily, the rights to this production are available to schools and other off-Broadway theatre groups from Music Theater International. TheatreWorld is pleased to announce that we are working on a series of brand new Shrek backdrops, which will be available from our rental inventories in October of 2013.
Very soon, directors who are looking to share their vision of Shrek with the world will have a suite of Signature Series backdrops for Shrek to choose from. Our Creative Team is using nuances from the show itself to put together these brand new drops. We have six different scenic backdrops currently in production to support all levels of Shrek stage shows and events. Expect to have access to the highest level of scenery for: Shrek’s Swamp, Dragon’s Lair, Duloc Castle, as well as three other drops that will assist your scenes set throughout the Land of Far Far Away. Our first release will be Dragon’s Lair. We have a sneak peak for you into our production process for this magnificent stage backdrop.
Creating the Dragon’s Lair
Our Creative Team has a knack for combining show themes with historical structures when they set out to create a new setting. During the planning process for Dragon’s Lair, the team knew that a dark and brooding ambience was necessary for Shrek and Donkey’s first foray into the Dragon’s Lair. The team looked to the underground regions of Chillon Castle, a magnificent structure that dates back to at least the Bronze Age, for inspiration. Chillon Castle’s underground is famous for the imprisonment of Bonivard, who eventually became the hero in Lord Byron’s poem The Prisoner of Chillon. It will live on in the theatre and event worlds as the historical basis for this scenic masterpiece. (Click here to learn more about the historic Chillon Castle)
With this architecture in mind, our artists set out to create our forthcoming Dragon’s Lair backdrop. The Dragon’s Lair cues a gloomy dungeon by design. The cold stone pillars serve to hold up the castle above. The iron gate and rock walls are capable of keeping even the most notorious criminals captive. The final backdrop will be realistically detailed. It will convey the menacing feeling that Shrek and Donkey surely felt as they made their way into the Dragon’s abode.
We are looking forward to releasing our full selection of Shrek backdrops very soon.
